Alice Anne Ellis - three works created during this class; Artist's Statement; research links.
(Hope the pictures come through this time. On my first attempt, they were copied from a Word document. This time I have reinserted them directly in this email.)
Cold Dawn. 7"x7.5". Gesso, foil and fabric on paper.
Babble. 14" x 12”. Acrylic, ink, rice paper, Denril, and foil, on hardboard.
Moon Reflections 2. 12"x12". Acrylic, ink, rice paper, Denril on hardboard.
Alice Anne Ellis – Artist’s Statement
I am inspired by natural forms, especially plants. I am also intrigued by writing and the range of understanding we have of simple marks on paper. Using letters and script in my work, I ponder the link between the shape of letters and physical phemomena. For instance, the letter "O" is like the shape a mouth makes as it says the letter. The letter "W" suggests the shape of waves in water. In copying text, I explore the visual texture of a written paragraph.
Notes on development of work during this class:
I began by wanting to explore the visual relationship between tree branches in the sky, or reflected in water, and script. I moved to exploring the nature of writing, as marks. I will explore this further, in conjunction with working with layers, and incorporating elements of drawing.
