I am interested in the way that many organs within our bodies have compensatory capabilities. The way this pertains to the brain was discussed in the interview. Disability was specifically addressed. Oliver Sachs and Chuck Close developed alternative forms of cognitive function to express subject matter. Individuals recreate the outside world with varying methods and interpretations.
I appreciated the discussion on working environments. Serra described an interdisciplinary situation and debunked the myth of artistic solitude.
I think that the video did an very good job of letting each artist freely discuss their impressions of creativity what it is and how it drives them. I was particularly impressed with the fact that both Close and Serra saw them selves as problem solvers and do not use art as a means of expressing feelings, hopes or concerns. Could that possibly be a somewhat gender based observation of mine? I also was struck with the observation that artists or creativity feeds off others in the somewhat same intensity. That is why it seems to be so important that artists need to be and work around each other. Also why pockets of "great" artists develop together.

This episode spoke to absolutely everyone, not just artists. It stressed that creativity is not limited to a select few. It is accessible in a lot of different ways, not just in creating art. One motivation for artists to think creatively in creating art is the desire to communicate a message. As artists, we understand this and so we try to dissect this message and determine other artists' processes when looking at their work. The artists interviewed stressed the importance of asking questions about the work you see. This is necessary for growth by learning something about that work which can be applied to making decisions in your own work, even those decisions are to NOT do something. Also, they felt strongly that creativity is not just about creating something new, but creating something great. In addition to having ideas, great artists must develop a superior level of competence in doing their work. This is true for a superior individual working in any profession.
