Picasso Biography in 9 parts

We attended the Picasso preview last night @ the VMFA. I'll likely see it many times before it leaves. It is the real deal. In the meantime, in preparation for your visit take a look at this bio and comment on it here when you've had a chance to digest it.

I knew little about the personal life of Picasso, wow, he was a character! Thoroughly enjoyed the video, and the explanation of the connection from his personal life to his art, despite my lagging connection!

my undergrad students have had their eyes opened with this one. I explain to them that one does not have to be a failure as a human being to be a great artist or vice versa. To be a failure at both.... now that is a tragedy.

It was interesting. I saw Picasso's drawings and etchings at the Met last summer, and think they are magnificent, regardless of their subject matter, but I'm not a great fan of his paintings, for the most part. In this biography, it seemed to me that he was as much a competitor as an artist, which was somewhat diminishing to me. (what the hey, Gauguin was a rotter as a human being, and I love his paintings!) Also, Picasso's adult life, with his wives and mistresses, seemed a translation of his childhood, when he was surrounded and adored by all the women in his family. Spoiled. I suspect he was one of those presences that was "larger than life", and was fascinating to know. I do, however, feel sorry for anyone who loved him.

I also saw the Picasso exhibit at the Met last year and am looking forward to this one. I'm finishing up a book titled "Shadow of the Wind" that is set in Spain and is adding background.
